Instead of higher and higher carbon taxes we need to see proven greenhouse gas reduction strategies implemented
Unfortunately, the Supreme Court decision is likely to overshadow the upcoming major increase which will take place here in British Columbia on April 1st
With the Supreme Court declaring that Trudeau’s Liberal government has the right to impose a federal carbon tax standard, those lined up against the tax have been dealt a hard blow.
Conservatives in B.C. have long opposed the carbon tax as one which has done little to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs), but instead has had a negative impact on family finances.
Commenting on yesterday’s decision, Conservative B.C. leader Trevor Bolin stated, “Instead of higher and higher carbon taxes, we need to see the implementation of proven greenhouse gas reduction strategies that have seen GHG reductions of 25 percent and more.
Governments in other jurisdictions have been able to bring about real results, from real solutions, rather than imposing punishing taxes.”
The Conservative leader went on to say, “Unfortunately, the Supreme Court decision is likely to overshadow the upcoming major increase which will take place here in British Columbia on April 1st.
Twelve months of disruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have already brought about substantial reductions in GHGs, and yet the provincial government is still determined to take more and more money out of the pockets of everyday British Columbians.
Wouldn’t that money be better used in helping bring about a stronger post-COVID economy? Some businesses have only just reopened, and many British Columbians have only recently returned to work,” the Conservative leader continued.
“Here’s the bottom line: this NDP government of Premier John Horgan would rather continue down the path that the BC Liberal Party first put us on and hit B.C. families with another increase to a tax that has been shown to have both zero impact on the environment, and a devastating outcome for the economy.”
Bolin concluded, “The Conservative Party of B.C. remains strongly opposed to this cash grab, and instead advocates practical and environmentally sound Made-In-BC solutions to reducing greenhouse gases.”
